Visit the Church of San Juan Ante Portam Latinam
Built in the 12th century, this Romanesque-style church belonged to the Commandery of the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in Wamba. Although small in size, its most notable features include its portal with six semi-circular archivolts and the semi-circular apse that forms the altar inside.
The church was restored in 1876 by architect Jerónimo Ortiz de Urbina. This intervention serves as a paradigmatic example of the restoration principles and practical criteria prevailing in mid-19th century Spain. Ortiz de Urbina, a graduate of the first classes of the Madrid Special School of Architecture, was a classmate of restoration architects Demetrio de los Ríos and Juan de Madrazo. Like his friend Adolfo Fernández de Casanova, they were influenced by the ideas of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.
